Professor Wei Liu is a Professor of Design Engineering and Innovation at King’s College London, serving as Associate Vice Dean (Postgraduate Taught Studies) in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences. With a PhD from the University of Cambridge and experience as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University, she has built a distinguished career spanning academia and industry. Before King’s, she held faculty positions at Cambridge Judge Business School, served as Assistant Dean at Tongji University, and was Director of the Design Research Group and Programme Director at Aston University. Her industry roles at BCG, IBM, and TEAMS Design resulted in designs that won international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award.
Wei Liu is an elected Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA), and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). She founded the MSci Design, Enterprise, and Innovation programme—the UK’s first integrating engineering, design, and business—and led the development of King’s Quad Engineering makerspaces. Her educational excellence has been recognized with the 2025 Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE), 2024 King’s Education Award, and the N.E.J. Stevenson Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research. In research, she has secured over £6.5 million in grants from EPSRC, NIHR, and NSFC, leading projects like DELONELINESS to address loneliness in older adults. Her interdisciplinary work in design, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and innovation management includes patented inventions and key publications such as “Managing Design for Environmental Sustainability throughout the Design Process” (2023), “Utilizing Artificial Intelligence Models to Support Environmental Sustainability Implementation in the Design Process” (2024), “Postgraduate design education and sustainability—An international survey” (2023), and “Accelerated innovation through repurposing: exaptation of design assets” (2021). She serves as Co-Editor of The Design Journal, Associate Editor of Gerontechnology, and holds other editorial positions, while contributing to EPSRC Review College and international committees.
