About Weiting

Dr Weiting Hu is a Lecturer in Finance in the School of Business at the University of Queensland's UQ Business School, part of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, completed between 2017 and 2023, where he was advised by the Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Philip H. Dybvig. Following his doctoral studies, Hu joined the University of Queensland in 2023 as a Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor) in Finance.

His research interests center on several key areas within finance: Financial Markets and Institutions, Market Microstructure—particularly over-the-counter markets and liquidity dynamics—Behavioral Finance, which explores the impact of psychologically influenced investors on market outcomes, and FinTech, with a focus on the influence of social media on financial behaviors and markets. Hu's fields of research encompass banking, finance and investment, commerce, management, tourism and services, finance, and financial institutions including banking. He has contributed to the literature with the SSRN working paper titled "Social media attention, stock returns and retail trades," co-authored with Rusi Yan in 2024, published under the UQ Business School Finance Discipline. Furthermore, Dr. Hu has secured funding from the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) Research Grants for the project "From Reddit to Wall Street: How Hedge Funds Navigate Social Media-Induced Market Disruptions," running from 2025 to 2026, in collaboration with Assistant Professor Tianyi Qu at the University of Queensland.

In addition to his research, Dr. Weiting Hu is actively engaged in teaching and supervision at UQ. He coordinates and teaches courses including Critical Issues in Finance (course code FINM6403) and Asset Pricing (FINM2416), both offered in Semester 2 at the St Lucia campus in person. He also supervises student theses, such as "Price and Non-Price Terms of Syndicated Loans to Technology Firms." As a recognized media expert, Hu is available for enquiries on topics related to social media and finance. His work contributes to the understanding of modern financial markets influenced by digital technologies and behavioral factors within the Business & Economics discipline.
