Dr. Yawen (Wendy) Chen is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Systems and Computing at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. She obtained her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Adelaide in 2008. Chen's research specializations include computer networks and systems, parallel and distributed computing, artificial intelligence acceleration, photonic computing and communication, wired and wireless networking, graph theory, and AI-related educational topics with innovative pedagogies. Her work specifically covers AI accelerators and optimization with chiplets, resource optimization in computer systems, networks and architectures, parallel and distributed models for IoT and multicore processors, optical network-on-chips, sensor networks and data center networks, high-performance computing including optical computing and communication as well as green and cloud computing, energy-efficient design and modeling, and graph theory applications such as geometric embedding.
Chen has an extensive publication record in leading journals and international conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems, INFOCOM, IPDPS, and ICPP. Key recent publications are 'CD-DPC: Centrifugal degree based density peaks clustering algorithm' in Pattern Recognition (2026, with Ma L et al.), 'SIPHON: Silicon Photonic Computing-Based Chiplet Accelerator for Deep Learning' in IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems (2026, with Xia C, Zhang H, Barnard AS), 'Emerging Distributed/Parallel Computing Systems' in Electronics Switzerland (2026, with Dai F), 'Virtual regularized bipartite graph learning for multi-view subspace clustering' in Knowledge Based Systems (2025, with Ma L et al.), 'TextCG: A text classification framework based on information fusion via cross-graph attention network and gated recurrent unit' in Information Sciences (2025, with Zang W et al.), 'ChipAI: A scalable chiplet-based accelerator for efficient DNN inference using silicon photonics' in Journal of Systems Architecture (2025, with Zhang H et al.), and 'BITLUME: Precision-Flexible Photonic Computing for Ultra-Fast and Energy-Efficient DNN Acceleration' at IEEE/ACM International Conference on Computer Aided Design (2025). She has produced 49 journal articles, 47 conference papers, 2 book chapters, 1 conference poster, and 1 preprint. Her research garners over 940 citations according to Google Scholar. Chen supervises Master's by research and PhD students in her areas of expertise.
