William Strange is the Camrost Felcorp Chair in Urban Economics at the Rotman School of Management and the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto. He joined the Rotman School in 2001 from the University of British Columbia, where he served as Chair of the Urban Land Economics Division and Director of the Centre for Real Estate and Urban Land Economics. At Rotman, he currently serves as Director of the David Feldman Centre for Real Estate. Professor Strange holds a PhD and MA from Princeton University and a BA from the University of Oregon.
His research focuses on urban economics and real estate, with publications addressing topics including industry clusters and agglomeration economies, private government institutions such as community associations and business improvement districts, and issues in real estate investment under uncertainty. His work has appeared in journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Urban Economics, and Journal of Public Economics. Professor Strange served as President of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association in 2011 and as Managing Editor of the Journal of Urban Economics from 2007 to 2019. He was elected a Fellow of the Regional Science Association in 2014 and has held leadership roles in the Urban Economics Association. He is also a co-editor of volumes 5A and 5B of the Handbook of Regional and Urban Economics.
