Rate My Professor Wim Gillis

Gillis maintains several technical projects on the University of Otago GitLab platform, including Docker Webtop, which deploys Alpine and Ubuntu-based containers providing full desktop environments accessible through modern web browsers. These include flavors such as alpine-icewm, alpine-i3, fedora-mate, fedora-xfce, debian-kde, and ubuntu-mate, with features like regular application updates and user mappings via PGID and PUID. Other repositories encompass NZSA2025-K8s, a Kubernetes project associated with the New Zealand Statistical Association conference, and postgresql-client. He has also developed custom Dockerfiles for tools like RStudio.

In academic research, Gillis has provided essential IT support, particularly for the Department of Anatomy. He facilitated data transfer from Graz, Austria, to Dunedin for the PhD thesis 'The Innervation of the Hip Joint Capsular Complex' (2022) and assisted with data management for the study 'Microstructural analysis on the innervation of the anterior, medial, and posterior hip joint capsule,' published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (2023). These contributions highlight his role in enabling advanced research workflows.
