About Xiaoling

Xiaoling Wu serves as Chairwoman of the Board and Dean of the PBC School of Finance at Tsinghua University, a position she has held since 2012. She previously served as Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China, overseeing monetary policy and related functions, and as the first female Director of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. Wu obtained a master’s degree in economics from the Graduate School of the People’s Bank of China in 1984. Her career at the central bank included roles as Deputy Director of the Department of Financial System Reform, Director of the Policy Research Office, Governor of the Shanghai Branch, and various leadership positions in foreign exchange administration. In 2008, she was elected to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and appointed Vice Chairman of the Finance and Economic Committee, a role she continued through the 12th NPC. Wu has contributed to key developments in Chinese finance, including measures during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, reforms related to foreign exchange reserves, the establishment of third-party custody systems incorporated into securities law, and the promotion of private equity through the founding of China’s first private equity fund association in 2007. She has received recognition including twice being named among the World’s 50 Most Watched Businesswomen by The Wall Street Journal and nominations as one of the Most Influential Women in the World by Forbes.
