About Xichun

Xichun Luo is a Professor in Ultra Precision Manufacturing in the Faculty of Engineering, Director of Research of the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management, and Technical Director of the Centre for Precision Manufacturing at the University of Strathclyde. He obtained his PhD at Leeds Metropolitan University. Professor Luo's research focuses on fundamental studies and applied research in ultra precision machining and manufacturing at micro, nano, and atomic scales. His work has revealed atomic-level machining mechanisms for semiconductor materials including Si, SiC, and GaAs, investigated ion-induced damage of diamond, and developed ultra-precision freeform machining technologies. His team established the world's first 6-axis hybrid micromachine and a novel digital twin-driven smart micromanufacturing system. He invented pulse modulated local anodic lithography and rolling nanoelectrode lithography processes, realizing groundbreaking sub-nanometre nanostructures for future photonics, microelectronics, medical, and quantum devices.

Professor Luo has over 240 publications, including two books, four invited book chapters, more than 170 papers in highly ranked journals, 70 conference papers, and four patents, with a Google Scholar h-index of 48. Since 2009, he has secured around £20.7 million in research funding, including £7.3 million as Principal Investigator, from sources such as EPSRC, EU, and industries like Renishaw and STMicroelectronics. His awards include the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 2015 Ludwig Mond Prize, IAAM Scientist Medal (2024), Best Editor Awards from International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing, and election as Fellow of the International Society for Nanomanufacturing, International Academy of Engineering and Technology, and International Association of Advanced Materials. He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of High-end Manufacturing, Associate Editor for Proceedings of IMechE Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Journal of Micromanufacturing, and Mechanical Sciences, and serves as Secretary General of the International Academy of Engineering and Technology since 2019 and Past-President of the Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK. Professor Luo has delivered over 30 keynote and plenary lectures at top precision engineering conferences and currently supervises five Research Associates and eight PhD students.
