Dr. Xuyun Zhang is an Associate Professor in the School of Computing at Macquarie University, part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He earned his PhD in Computer and Information Science from the University of Technology Sydney in 2014, Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Technology from Nanjing University in 2011, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Technology from Nanjing University in 2008. His professional career includes serving as Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University since 2019, Lecturer at the University of Auckland from 2016 to 2019, and Postdoctoral Researcher at NICTA (now Data61, CSIRO) from 2014 to 2016. In addition, he holds leadership roles such as Director of Industry & External Relations at the Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence since 2024, Cyber Security Course Director since 2023, and Cyber Security Program Leader from 2020 to 2022. Zhang teaches units including Offensive Security, Applied Cryptography, and Data Science.
Zhang's research focuses on scalable and secure machine learning, big data privacy and cybersecurity, big data mining and analytics, and cloud/edge/service computing and IoT. His scholarship has amassed over 13,500 citations on Google Scholar with an h-index of 60. Notable publications include 'Membership inference attacks on machine learning: A survey' in ACM Computing Surveys (2022), 'A scalable two-phase top-down specialization approach for data anonymization using MapReduce on cloud' in IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (2013), 'A computation offloading method over big data for IoT-enabled cloud-edge computing' in Future Generation Computer Systems (2019), and 'BeCome: Blockchain-enabled computation offloading for IoT in mobile edge computing' in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2019). He has received the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) Fellowship (2021-2023), recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science by Clarivate (2021), Early-Career Research Excellence Award from the University of Auckland (2019), Chancellor's Award for Best PhD Thesis from UTS (2015), Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Student Abroad (2012), and several IEEE best paper awards including from ICDM (2022 runner-up), UIC (2022), iThings (2022), and HPCC (2021).
