Professor Yansong Shen is a Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). He holds a BEng (1996-2001, Top Student Class) and an MEng (2001-2003) from the School of Materials and Metallurgy at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, and a PhD (2004-2009) from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at UNSW. His career at UNSW includes progression through Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Associate Professor roles before his appointment as full Professor. He previously held a Lecturer position at Monash University (2014-2016). Professor Shen serves as Director of the UNSW SCoPE Lab for Green Metals and Director of an ARC Research Hub. He is President of the Australasian Particle Technology Society (since 2019).
Professor Shen’s research focuses on reacting flow modelling and simulation, particle technology, process metallurgy, and recycling of plastics, solar panels, and batteries, with additional interests in hydrogen generation and storage. He has been recognised as an ARC Future Fellow and was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) in 2025 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales (RSNSW) in 2025. His work emphasises computational approaches to sustainable metallurgy and green metals production.
