Dr. Yee Yong Tan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Science, at Curtin University Malaysia. He joined Curtin University Malaysia in 2013 as a Tutor and Laboratory Instructor, advancing to Lecturer from 2017 to 2021, and has served as Senior Lecturer since 2021. Since 2019, he has been the Programme Coordinator for Environmental Engineering. Before entering academia full-time, he worked as a Civil Engineer at Reliacon Sdn. Bhd. from 2012 to 2013. Yee Yong Tan earned his PhD in Civil and Construction Engineering from Curtin University Malaysia in 2017, following his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in the same discipline completed in 2012. He holds Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, number 0244162), and is recognized as a Professional Engineer (PEng) and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).
His academic interests center on sustainable wastewater and sludge treatment technologies, particularly vertical flow constructed wetlands, faecal sludge management, reactive transport modelling, wastewater treatment process modelling, and nitrogen dynamics in treatment systems. Yee Yong Tan has contributed significantly to the field through peer-reviewed publications. Notable works include 'Process-based models for nitrogen dynamics in subsurface flow constructed wetlands: A state-of-the-art review' (Environmental Reviews, 2021, with Fu Ee Tang and Agus Saptoro), 'Effect of loading rate and sludge deposit on a VFCW treating septage' (Journal of Applied Water Engineering and Research, 2020), 'Dewatering and Treatment of Septage Using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands' (Technologies, 2017, with Fu Ee Tang, Carrie Lee Ing Ho, and Valerie Siew Wee Jong), 'A Tracer Study in a Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland Treating Septage' (World Journal of Engineering, 2018, with Jason Jie Xiang Bui, Fu Ee Tang, and Carrie Ho Lee Ing), and 'Septage Treatment Using Vertical-Flow Engineered Wetland: A Critical Review' (Chemical Engineering Transactions, 2015). Recent publications extend to adsorbent pervious concrete for stormwater mitigation, advanced oxidation processes for pharmaceutical wastewater, and dye removal using hybrid nanocomposites (2024-2025). His research supports innovative, low-cost solutions for managing domestic wastewater and septage in rural areas, enhancing environmental engineering practices.
