Yi Shen is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics at Winthrop University's College of Business and Technology. She joined Winthrop University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor and was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor by the Board of Trustees on May 1, 2025, effective that August. Dr. Shen earned her Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2019, Master of Science from Johns Hopkins University in 2014, and Bachelor of Science magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University in 2013. Her academic career builds on prior experience as an analyst at Morgan Stanley.
Dr. Shen's research specializes in empirical corporate finance topics, including corporate finance, labor and finance, and banking, with emphasis on bank loan pricing, unemployment risk, corporate innovation, and the real effects of financial policies. Key publications include Hasan, I., Shen, Y., and Yuan, X. (2021). 'Local product market competition and bank loans,' Journal of Corporate Finance, 70, 102054; Shen, Y. (2022). 'Labor unemployment insurance and bank loans,' Journal of Corporate Finance, 76, 102254; Jiang, T., Shen, Y., He, Y., and Wang, Z. (2024). Her paper 'Labor Unemployment Insurance and R&D Productivity' was a semi-finalist for the Best Paper Award at the 2019 Financial Management Association Annual Meeting. Dr. Shen received the Winthrop University College of Business and Technology Springs Research Award and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 2024. She teaches finance courses, including in the online MBA program, and has delivered selected conference presentations.
