Dr. Yihai Fang is a Senior Lecturer in Construction Engineering and Management in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, awarded in 2016, and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Tongji University in 2011. Before joining Monash University in August 2017, he worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at the College of Design, Construction and Planning at the University of Florida from 2016 to 2017. Fang is registered as a Professional Engineer in Victoria and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Australia.
Fang's research focuses on Construction Automation and Informatics, Construction Robotics, Digital Twins for Construction and Built Environments, and Construction Safety and Human Factors, leveraging machine learning, sensing technologies, 3D mapping, and Virtual and Augmented Reality. His scholarly output includes 56 journal publications—with 60% in the top 10% of journals ranked by SNIP—28 peer-reviewed conference papers, and five book chapters, accumulating over 3,300 citations and an h-index of 29. Key publications encompass 'A Comprehensive Taxonomy of Supply Chain Risks in Construction Project Management: A Systematic Literature Review' (2025, Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction), 'A dual-image fusion instance segmentation model for pavement patch detection' (2025, International Journal of Pavement Engineering), and 'Agent-Based Simulation Approach to Analyzing the Impact of Construction Safety Management Behaviors on Workers' Safety Behaviors' (2025, Journal of Construction Engineering and Management). He has earned the Outstanding Supervision Award and Excellence in Research Award from his department in 2025 and 2024, respectively, the Best Paper Award from the European Council on Computing in Construction in 2024, and the Construction Innovation Award (International Merit) from the Construction Industry Council of Hong Kong in 2026 for SmartCraneLift.AI. Fang serves as an Editorial Board Member for Automation in Construction and Smart Construction, Guest Editor for Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, and participates in ASCE committees on Visualization, Information Modeling, and Simulation (VIMS) and Data Sensing and Analysis (DSA), as well as the Global Leadership Forum for Construction Engineering and Management Future Leaders Committee.
