He earned a PhD in Medicine from the University of Tokyo. His career includes positions as a JSPS Research Fellow, postdoctoral scholar at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, specially appointed researcher and assistant professor at Osaka University’s Institute for Protein Research, and program-specific assistant professor and Hakubi Center associate professor at Kyoto University before his current role.
Sugita’s research focuses on the structural biology of RNA viruses using cryo-electron microscopy and related techniques. He has contributed to studies on the assembly and ultrastructure of viruses including influenza, Ebola, Marburg, and Borna disease virus. Key publications include the Cryo-EM structure of the Ebola virus nucleoprotein-RNA complex published in Nature in 2018 and Structure and assembly of Borna disease virus 1 nucleoprotein–RNA complexes published in Science Advances in 2026. He maintains professional memberships in the Japanese Society for Virology, the Biophysical Society of Japan, and the Protein Science Society of Japan.
