About Yutaka

Yutaka Matsuo is a professor at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering in the Department of Technology Management for Innovation. He graduated from the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering at the University of Tokyo in 1997 and received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the same university in 2002. He previously held research positions at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. From 2005 to 2007, he served as a visiting scholar at Stanford University, and from 2014 to 2017 he was a visiting associate professor at the National University of Singapore. He was appointed associate professor at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering in 2007 and promoted to professor in 2019. He is also affiliated with the Research into Artifacts, Center for Engineering and the Program for Social Innovation within the School of Engineering.

His research specializes in artificial intelligence, deep learning, web mining, and generative AI. Matsuo has served as chairman of the Japan Deep Learning Association since 2017. He is an outside director of SoftBank Group Corporation since 2019, an outside director of Panasonic Holdings Corporation since 2025, and holds multiple advisory and leadership roles in Japanese government and industry bodies, including expert member of the Council for Achieving New Capitalism, chair of the AI Strategy Conference since 2023, chair of the AI Institutional Study Group since 2024, chairperson of the Tokyo AI Strategy Council since 2024, expert member of the Council for Japan’s Growth Strategy since 2025, member of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI under the United Nations since 2026, and member of the Expert Panel to Consider National Security from the Perspective of Comprehensive National Power since 2026. He also serves as a technical advisor to Matsuo Institute Inc. since 2020 and as a board director of the AI Robot Association since 2024. He was director of the Department of Technology Management for Innovation from 2023 to 2025.
