Zbigniew M. Szczepiorkowski, MD, PhD, is Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College within the Medicine faculty. He specializes in transfusion medicine, serving as Director of the Transfusion Medicine Service and Cellular Therapy Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Szczepiorkowski earned his MD magna cum laude from Warsaw Medical University in 1991 and PhD in Medicine from Postgraduate Center of Medical Education in Warsaw, Poland, in 1997. His training at Massachusetts General Hospital encompassed research fellowships in pathology, residency in clinical pathology (Chief Resident, 1997), and fellowship in transfusion medicine (1998). Board certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, he joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 2003 as Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor in 2006 and full Professor in 2019.
In addition to directing the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program and Transfusion Medicine Research Center, he is Section Chief of Laboratory Medicine/Clinical Pathology and Medical Director of the Blood Donor Program/Apheresis. His research interests include translational research on novel cellular therapies applied across medicine and evidence-based approaches to therapeutic apheresis. Szczepiorkowski has co-edited major texts including Apheresis: Principles and Practice (3rd edition, 2010) and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Handbook for Clinicians (2nd edition, 2015). Recent publications feature "Platelet Transfusion: 2025 AABB and ICTMG International Clinical Practice Guidelines" (JAMA, 2025), "Use of Intravenous Albumin: A Guideline From the International Collaboration for Transfusion Medicine Guidelines" (Chest, 2024), and "Immunologic investigation of an allergic transfusion reaction suspected due to alpha-gal syndrome" (Transfusion, 2025). With over 8,000 Google Scholar citations, his contributions shape standards in transfusion medicine and cellular therapy. He chairs the FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee, served as President of the American Society for Apheresis, and holds board positions with organizations like ICCBBA. Awards include Top Doctor recognition by Castle Connolly (2024-2026).
