Zhanel DeVides, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the Business department at Pennsylvania State University Abington, where she has taught since 2019. She earned a Ph.D. in Accounting with a minor in Finance from Purdue University, an MBA from Southern Methodist University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Management and Economics from Kazakh State Academy of Management. DeVides brings extensive teaching experience from the United States and her native Kazakhstan, instructing courses including ACCTG 211: Financial and Managerial Accounting for Decision Making and ACCTG 471: Intermediate Accounting I.
Her research explores the role of accounting information and stakeholders’ preferences in effective capital allocation, emphasizing channels of information transfer between organizations and capital providers. Expertise areas include earnings properties, voluntary disclosure, financial analysts, nonprofit accounting, and social responsibility. DeVides has published in leading journals such as Accounting and Business Research, Managerial Finance, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Journal of Financial Research, and Review of Accounting and Finance. Select publications are “Earnings Patterns and CEO Contractual Outcomes” (forthcoming, Accounting and Business Research, 2025), “Does Litigation Contingency Disclosure in Corporate Filings Matter? Evidence from Securities Class Action Lawsuits” (Managerial Finance, 2024), “Funding Implications of Normal and Excessive Profitability in the Nonprofit Sector” (Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, 2022), and “Earnings Patterns and Managerial Guidance” (Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, 2022), the latter receiving the Eastern Finance Association Outstanding Paper Award. She was awarded the Fulbright Foundation – University of Vaasa Scholar Award in 2023 for research on managerial gender effects in market reactions to earnings guidance conducted at the University of Vaasa, Finland. Additional honors include the Open Society Institute Global Track Faculty Development Grant. DeVides serves as Membership Chair of the Government and Nonprofit Section of the American Accounting Association.
