COMPETITION FOR THE AWARD OF A GRANT, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE RESEARCH GRANT REGULATIONS OF FCT
Title: 1 Bolsa de Investigação Pós-Doutoral
A competition is open for the award of 1 Bolsa de Investigação Pós-Doutoral within the scope of the R&D project UID/05739/2025 - CEAD/Research Centre in Adult Education and Community Intervention, funded Centros de Investigação), under the following conditions:
- Scientific Area: Educational Sciences
- Admission Requirements: PhD in Educational Sciences or a related field; proficiency in Portuguese; English language skills at an independent user level; experience in publishing scientific articles; and experience participating in funded research projects (preferred criterion).
Taking into account paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 7 of the Research Grants Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology or paragraphs 1 of Article 6 of the University of the Algarve’s Research Fellowship Regulations:- Postdoctoral research fellowships, hereinafter referred to as BIPD, are intended to support R&D activities carried out by individuals holding a doctoral degree.
- BIPDs are time-limited in order to encourage scientific employment and the use of researcher contracts as the standard means of hiring, as well as to promote the development, within entities of the national science and technology system, of careers focused on scientific research.
- Project Objectives: The project aims to understand how the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping digital inclusion practices and lifelong learning, exploring both the opportunities and challenges that these technologies present for different groups of adults. At the same time, it seeks to identify mechanisms of digital exclusion associated with inequalities in access to, use of, and understanding of AI, generating knowledge to support more inclusive and equitable educational policies and practices. Specifically, the project aims to: a) Characterize levels of knowledge, use, and trust in Artificial Intelligence among different groups of adults, considering variables such as age, gender, educational attainment, employment status, socioeconomic background, and geographical location; b) Analyze digital literacy and AI literacy competencies, and their relationship with patterns of AI use across multiple contexts; c) Identify barriers to accessing and using Artificial Intelligence, including technological, economic, social, cultural, and educational factors, and examine how these may contribute to digital exclusion and exacerbate existing inequalities among different groups of adults; d) Examine adults’ perceptions of the risks, ethical challenges, and social implications associated with Artificial Intelligence, including issues related to privacy, transparency, algorithmic bias, and technological dependency; e) Develop recommendations for promoting digital inclusion and AI literacy among adults.
- Applicable Legislation and Regulations: Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of August 18, as amended by Decree-Law No. 65/2024 of October 1, and the Foundation for Science and Technology Research Grant Regulations (https://files.diariodarepublica.pt/2s/2026/01/004000000/0010200122.pdf).
- Workplace: The work will be carried out at the Research Centre for Adult Education and Community Intervention (CEAD) of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve, under the scientific supervision of Professor António Carlos Pestana Fragoso de Almeida, PhD.
- Duration of grant(s): The scholarship will have a duration of 12 months, with an expected start date in November 2026. The scholarship contract may be renewed for an additional six-month period, in accordance with the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), available at: https://files.diariodarepublica.pt/2s/2026/01/004000000/0010200122.pdf.

- Candidate evaluation: In accordance with Article 11(2) of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the evaluation of candidates will be based solely on the following criteria: candidate merit (40%) and the merit of the work plan (40%). The evaluation process also includes an interview with the candidates, which will have a maximum weighting of 20%.

- Participation in funded research projects (30%);
- Publications, with particular emphasis on scientific articles (30%);
- English language proficiency (20%).
- Innovative nature of the proposal (20%);
- Scientific quality of the literature review/state of the art (20%);
- Scientific quality of the proposed methodology (40%);
- Expected outputs and achievement indicators (20%).
- Composition of the Application Evaluation Board: The Application Evaluation Board is composed of three full members and one alternate (all PhDs):

Cristina Maria Coimbra Vieira (1º Vogal suplente) (Professora Associada; Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra). - Publication/Notification of Results: The final evaluation results will be published on the Ualg website, in a list ordered by the final grade obtained, and the successful candidate will be notified via email.
- Application Deadline and Submission Method: The competition is open from 09/09/2026 to 22/09/2026.
- Applications must be accompanied by the following documents:
- Official identification document (simple copy or legal equivalent). Applicants of non-Portuguese nationality must present a residence permit, permanent residence certificate, or long-term resident status, valid on the scholarship start date. Any of these may be replaced, in its absence, by a declaration of honor by the candidate. However, this must be submitted during the scholarship contracting phase, under penalty of forfeiture of the scholarship award;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Work Plan (a research project feasible within the 12-month duration of the fellowship), with the following structure: Title of the work plan; Abstract (maximum 150 words); 4 keywords; Objectives; Relevance and timeliness of the research (maximum 300 words); State of the art (maximum 600 words); Methodology (maximum 1,000 words); Expected outputs and achievement indicators; References; Timeline;
- Copy of the qualification certificates for the academic degrees held, specifying the final grade and, if possible, the grades obtained in all courses taken;
- Other documents deemed relevant due to the type and modality of the scholarship.
- Documents to be submitted for the scholarship agreement:
- Individual Taxpayer Registry (INV) information, if the applicant is a nationality other than Portuguese, must be submitted during the scholarship agreement process, under penalty of forfeiture of the scholarship award;
- Documents proving that the applicant meets the requirements for the respective type of scholarship, namely, proof of enrollment and registration and the study cycle or course that does not confer an academic degree;
- Declaration of the advisor(s) assuming responsibility for supervising the work plan, in accordance with Article 5-A of the Research Scholarship Statute, as well as guaranteeing the necessary conditions for the successful development of the work and compliance with the duties set forth in Article 13 of the Research Scholarship Statute;
- Declaration of Commitment to the Exclusive Dedication Regime.
- Deadlines and Procedures for Complaints and Appeals: Candidates may, if they so wish, comment on the draft decision to award the requested scholarship, at a hearing for interested parties within 10 business days, under the terms and for the purposes set forth in Article 121 of the Code of Administrative Procedure. Candidates have the right to complain to the evaluation panel within 10 business days regarding the commission or omission of any act. An appeal may be filed against the final decision of the application evaluation panel to the Rector within 10 business days of notification.
- Scholarship Contract: After receiving all required documentation, a scholarship contract will be signed with the selected candidate(s) in accordance with the attached template.
- Evaluation of Fellow(s): At the end of each fellowship contract period, the advisor will evaluate the fellow(s)' work by applying the following criteria, in accordance with the attached template: a) Evaluation of the activity report prepared by the fellowship holder; b) Evaluation of the implementation of the research carried out by the fellowship holder; c) Evaluation of the fellowship’s productivity indicators; d) Ability to work collaboratively within the research centre environment. The University of Algarve reserves the right to cancel the fellowship award process, within the scope of the Project in question, whenever funding is not awarded or the scholarship duration exceeds the project completion date.
