17 Doctoral candidates in Fundamentals and Applications of Doped Organic Semiconductors

16 research groups scattered in Europe and in the UK are now seeking 17 Doctoral applicants to take part of a European Marie Sklodowska-Curie Training Network programme FADOS.

About FADOS

FADOS, Fundamentals and Applications of Doped Organic Semiconductors, is a consortium composed of eight universities, four research institutes, and four companies from EU countries, the UK and Switzerland. The mission of FADOS is to achieve targeted modification of semiconductor properties through electronic doping to control and modify its electronic characteristics. The project’s goal is to develop fundamental understanding and innovative fabrication processes to solve urgent problems in organic electronic devices, and enable new components with sustainable functionalities. Collaboration with industry partners will enhance the translation of research into real-world applications.

The 17 Doctoral candidates recruited for this international project will receive training at the forefront of research and innovation in organic electronics. Moreover, the network will provide Doctoral candidates with exposure to academic and commercial working environments through a balanced secondment plan, and access to a complete training programme complementing scientific skills with personal and entrepreneurial skills, including communication to various audiences, career development, intellectual property and startup-funding.

The doctoral candidates will form a strong cohort through participation in seven network-wide events as well as secondments and collaborations, which entail travel to several different EU countries.

All following research groups are looking for Doctoral candidates:

• Prof Martijn Kemerink at Heidelberg University, Germany. Two Doctoral positions available on the following topics: ‘Modelling mixed transport in inhomogeneous systems’, and ‘Experimental assessment of mechanical, thermal and electric properties of doped semiconductors’.
• Prof Christian Müller at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Doping gradients for spatial modulation of electrical and mechanical properties’.

• Prof Mario Caironi at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Italy. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Developing advanced printed organic transistors architectures exploiting spatially controlled doping’.
• Prof Simone Fabiano at Linköping University, Sweden. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Photocatalytic doping of organic semiconductors’.
• Prof Alessandro Troisi at University of Liverpool, UK. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Modelling charge transport in doped polymeric semiconductors’.
• Prof. Martin Brinkmann at Institute Charles Sadron (Université de Strasbourg, CNRS), France. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Developing advanced structural investigation and doping methods’.
• Prof Sabine Ludwigs at Stuttgart University, Germany. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Electrochemical doping of patterned semiconductor arrays’.

• Dr Thomas Österberg at Epishine, Sweden. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Robust and selective doping strategies for industrial applications’.
• Prof Ludvig Edman at LunaLEC and the Organic Electronics and Photonics Group at Umeå University, Sweden. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Understanding and controlling electrochemical doping for efficient and sustainable light-emission devices’.
• Prof Francesca Santoro at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Development of 3D semiconducting hydrogel for cell interfacing’.
• Prof Natalie Banerli at the University of Bern, Switzerland. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Spectroscopic characterization of doped films’.
• Dr Davide Moia at FLUXiM, Switzerland. One Doctoral position available on the topic: ‘Advanced numerical modelling and characterization of doping in semiconductor devices’.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Depending on each specific project, the Doctoral candidate will explore various aspects of organic semiconductor doping, from fundamental concepts to device applications. The list of appointments includes experimental, computational and mixed projects. The Doctoral candidate will carry out original research, submit publications to refereed journals, help with the organisation of research labs, and take part of the life of the FADOS consortium. Through this appointment, you will also travel to various countries in Europe for two to three secondments.

QUALIFICATIONS and ELIGIBILITY

Applications are welcomed from candidates with a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent, including candidates who are about to complete their degrees) in physics, material science, chemistry or related fields (degree focus depending on project). In addition to the above, essential requirements and desirable requirements have been listed for each proposed project (see link above).

Eligibility for FADOS programme: At the time of recruitment, be in the first four years of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Mobility rule: The applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. Demonstrate their ability to understand English and express themselves fluently in speech and writing. The applicant can be of any nationality.

APPOINTMENT

The length of the appointment varies between 36 and 48 months, depending on the project, with a starting date on 1 February 2026 or by agreement. A competitive salary depending on the country where the PhD is taking place and in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Doctoral Researchers will be offered, including a living allowance, a mobility allowance, and a family allowance (if applicable).
