The research project “The Republic of Newsletters: International Republicanism in the Making of Democratic Political Cultures, 1815-1840” invites applications for two 21-month fixed-term postdoctoral position in Intellectual History with a focus on either Latin America or Greece in the time period analysed in the project.
The appointment begins on 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of work will be Aarhus University, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 5, 8000 Aarhus C.
The university is keen for its staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified applicants regardless of their personal background.
Research context
We are looking for two innovative researchers with a background in history, philosophy, political theory, or literature preferably with a specialisation in the intellectual history of either Latin America or Greece in the 18th or 19th century.
The Republic of Newsletters seeks to rewrite the history of republicanism and the making of new democratic cultures in the Age of Revolutions by analysing connections and translation networks between four geographic zones that all underwent significant political and social change in the period between 1815 and 1840; namely France, Haiti, Greece, and Gran Colombia. The aim of the project is to understand how different conceptions of a republic and of political participation emerged in the period, and how such conceptions depended on domestic conditions as well as international connections.
The project will focus mainly, though not exclusively, on newspapers and periodicals as its source material. The project will furthermore seek to explore the perspectives of women, (formerly) enslaved people, and working-class people.
The successful applicants are expected to work closely with the project’s principal investigator, Nicolai von Eggers, and to be responsible for empirical research of one of the following two regions: (I) Gran Colombia, (II) Greece.
The position
The successful applicants are expected to:
- Conduct original empirical research on periodicals in either (a) Gran Colombia, or (b) Greece in the period between 1815 and 1840. Applicants will be expected to work both with digital archives and in situ.
- Be fluent in their language of research and in English. Knowledge of other languages, including French and Haitian Kreyol will be considered an asset.
- Be part of a research team consisting of the PI and the other postdoc that will work both individually and collectively on research questions.
- Publish their findings in English in peer-reviewed journals. Each applicant is expected to first author two articles.
- Co-edit a peer reviewed volume on the topic of the project together with the team.
- Assist with the organization of research workshops and other events related to the project.
- Present their research at international conferences.
- Contribute to grant applications for further research funding related to the project.
- Participate actively, constructively, and kindly in the academic life of the Department of History and the School as a whole.
Teaching
If the candidate has experience in teaching digital history, it may be possible to negotiate an extension of the contract in exchange for teaching digital history at the department of history. Any decision in the matter will rely on the approval from the head of the School of Culture and Society.
