2 Research Initiation Grant (M/F)
A call for applications is now open for two research Initiation Grant within the framework of project “SNexT: New generation of hybrid tools”, with nr. 14419 and operation code at the Funds Platform COMPETE2030-FEDER-00582100 co-financed by the European Union through the COMPETE 2030 Programme, of Portugal 2030, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering
Admission requirements:
- students enrolled in a higher professional technical course, a bachelor's degree, an integrated master's degree, or a master's degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related areas, a requirement to be proven at the time of hiring.
- holders of an academic degree who are enrolled in non-degree courses, integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be proven at the time of hiring.
Note: If the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decreto-Lei No. 66/2018, of August 16, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled prior to hiring.
In accordance with Article 5 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.:
- The grant may only be awarded to those who, upon signing the grant agreement in question, including any possible renewals, do not exceed a cumulative period of one year in this type of grant, whether consecutive or intermittent.
- The grant cannot be awarded to anyone who has already benefited from research grants directly or indirectly funded by the FCT, awarded under the terms of the Research Grant Holder Statute.
Work plan: The fellow will participate in the development of solutions for process monitoring, control, and optimization, including the creation and integration of digital tools and data management throughout the product lifecycle.
The work will also include the prototyping and experimental validation of the developed solutions, as well as results analysis and continuous system improvement. The integration between physical and digital systems will be promoted, ensuring traceability, interoperability, and decision support.
The fellow will also contribute to technical documentation and collaboration with the project team and partners, ensuring the coherence and industrial applicability of the developed solutions.
Applicable legislation and regulations: Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, in its current wording (Statute of Scientific Research Fellows) and the current Regulations on Research Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology and the current Regulations on Research Fellowships of the University of Porto.
Workplace: The work will be developed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Tiago Emanuel Fraga da Silva and Professor Ana Rosanete Lourenço Reis.
Duration of the scholarship and Activity Regime: The scholarship will last for 3 months, with the predicted starting date in May 2026, on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable but never exceeding the end of the project.
The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 5º of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
If it is not possible to ensure the 3 month duration provided for in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, provided that a minimum duration of 1 consecutive month is guaranteed, as provided for in paragraph 3 of Article 5 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.
Monthly maintenance allowance: The monthly scholarship amount will be €701,12, according to the table of values for scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal
Payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection methods:
Curriculum evaluation (75%), which will focus on the candidate's merit, in which the following factors will be considered:
- Academic background in Mechanical Engineering - 5 points; in related areas - 2 points; other areas - 0 points.
- Master's degree attendance: - 5 points; master's degree attendance, but without availability to write a master's thesis on the scholarship topic: - 2 points; other conditions: 0 points.
- Experience in modelling and/or data analysis in the field of machining processes automation: attendance with passing grades in courses in the field - 5 points; attendance and passing grades in some courses partially covering the areas of the contract - 3 points; no experience - 0 points;
Interview (25%): The five highest-ranked candidates, according to the above criteria, will be invited for an interview. This will add up to 5 points.
If no candidate achieves a minimum score of 14 points, the respective scholarship may not be awarded.

Method of publicizing/notifying results: The results of the evaluation will be sent by email to the email address provided in the application.

(template below); and other documents considered relevant by the candidate.
