1. Introduction to the Department
The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (hereinafter referred to as "Kavli Institute") was established in 2006 and officially started operation in 2007. It is the most internationalized scientific research institution in the Chinese astronomical community. The Kavli Institute is committed to building a world-class astronomy and astrophysics research center, promoting the development of basic scientific research in China at the highest international level, and becoming a bridge connecting the rapidly rising China and the scientific community of developed countries. In 2020 , Peking University established the Chinese Space Station Engineering Survey Telescope ( CSST ) Peking University Science Center. The Peking University astronomy team took the lead in organizing experts in the field of galaxies and active galactic nuclei across the country to carry out research, which will make important contributions to China's space station cause.
Peking University's astronomy discipline includes the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Department of Astronomy. It currently has 23 full-time teachers and 20 postdoctoral fellows . At the same time, most of the teachers, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students of the Department of Astronomy work at the Kavli Institute. Currently, 25% of the teachers at the Kavli Institute are foreign, and 20% of the postdoctoral fellows are foreign. The working language is English. The Kavli Institute actively conducts academic exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions, is committed to astrophysical theory and observational research, and cultivates and trains outstanding students and postdoctoral fellows.
The Kavli Institute's academic research focuses on the following four major directions: ( 1 ) observational cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution; ( 2 ) interstellar medium, star formation, stellar and planetary systems; ( 3 ) gravitational physics and high-energy astrophysical phenomena; ( 4 ) computational astrophysics (multi-body simulation, fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamic simulation). Kavli Institute researchers have many opportunities to use domestic and foreign observation equipment and computing resources (including a GPU computer cluster). At present, we are looking to recruit outstanding experts in any of the above fields. Kavli Institute seeks candidates with excellent observational and theoretical work, and will provide excellent research and living conditions for the selected candidates.
