This project seeks to develop modelling approaches that simulate coupled electrical and moisture transport in porous materials at various scales, to predict where preferential flow develops and its consequences for the technologies that depend on it. This will be achieved predominantly through finite element analysis, with an emphasis on understanding the behaviour in soils and cementitious materials.
Access to state-of-the-art simulation software, high-performance computing facilities, and experimental laboratories will facilitate comprehensive analysis and validation of the developed models, ensuring robust and reliable research outcomes.

Academic Criteria
Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first-class degree or a good 2.1 (or their equivalent) in Engineering or a related subject.
Desirable skills
- Strong foundation in numerical methods, with particular emphasis on finite element analysis.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++ for numerical analysis and model development.
- Some familiarity with coupled or multiphysics problems, such as fluid flow, heat transfer or electrical conduction in porous media.
- Problem-solving aptitude and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
