Academic Adviser
Position Purpose
Provide academic advising to current and prospective undergraduate students who are pursuing or plan to pursue an undergraduate degree program in the School of Business Administration. Assist in the design, development, and implementation of student recruitment, admission, retention and advising activities, including the use of technical solutions. Maintain student records and monitor student academic progress. Coordinate, prepare and maintain transfer credit evaluations. Perform necessary administrative functions related to students' academic progress (overrides, permission to participate in commencement, change of major, petitions of exception, etc.). Complete graduation audits. Participate in admissions programs, orientation sessions, and group advising sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Ed or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of one year experience in academic counseling or advising.
- Knowledge of counseling techniques.
- Demonstrated skill in working with students to achieve educational goals, retention and student success.
- Ability to work collaboratively with academic colleagues in development of academic advising protocol and programs to retain students and move them through their major course of study.
- Strong technical and database skills with a willingness to engage in training and implementation of new advising technology.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of Oakland University's programs and policies.
- Experience in the use and interpretation of reporting and predictive analytical tools such as Argos and Degree Works.
- Experience with an integrated student record system.
- Ability to use technological platforms to enhance advising and retention.
