The CUNY Inclusive Economy Initiative (CIE) aims to enhance student career success through strengthening campus capabilities in fostering employer relationships and guiding students in aligning their academic and co-curricular experiences with their career goals. Advisors will work with Industry Specialists to support a cohort of LaGuardia students, connecting them with relevant internship or full-time opportunities in a selected industry as they advance toward completing their associateās degree. Strong academic and transfer advising will lay the foundation for implementing career-connected advising strategies.
The division of Academic Affairs at LaGuardia Community College seeks advisors to help align and extend the mission of CUNY CIE to support studentsā career and transfer exploration, career-connected learning, and preparation for internship opportunities. Candidates are not required to have industry-specific content knowledge, but an understanding of the alignment of college majors with key sectors of the NYC economy is required.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Advising, duties include:
- Provide mandated academic advisement and registration assistance for declared majors in Green Industries (including environmental science and biology), Management (including healthcare), or Psychological Services (including human services);
- Provide both group and 1:1 activity designed to help students identify career goals, academic courses, and goal-oriented career opportunities;
- Develop the cohortās identity as a peer network;
- Help students plan for internships and other opportunities to build their experience in and exposure to workplaces;
- Assess studentsā professional readiness and development at several stages through the cohort;
- Track progress, challenges, and outcomes using state-of-the-art technology to measure success and make adjustments in real-time;
- Ensure that CIE students are on-track to participate in relevant career-related programs;
- Collaborate among academic/career advisors and academic departments on insights from employers that might influence individual student progress;
- Participate in CUNY-wide professional development and mentoring;
- Promote connections for students to supportive services, such as tutoring and career services to increase persistence in the major;
- Support students' persistence in the major and perform graduation checks;
- Work with students to determine stops, advise into newly created initiatives addressing developmental needs, and schedule on-demand registration appointments;
- Maintain database of students in the Advising cohort;
- Utilize career-infused degree maps to provide students with timed guidance both on the courses required to earn a degree within the major and the milestones students need to meet to be positioned for success on the job market when they graduate;
- Performs related duties and occasional weekend responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- An understanding of the tech industry and its relationship to higher education.
- Experience with data and reporting (both quantitative and qualitative written reports)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous familiarity with integrating transfer and career conversations in academic advising.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience or ability to quickly learn appropriate modules in the CUNYFirst system.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
- Provides basic administrative support for the academic counseling program.
- Coordinates group student academic counseling and advisement workshops; schedules on-going advisement sessions
- Works with students to resolve academic issues by providing policy information and/or referrals
- Assists with training students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies
- Conducts workshops for new faculty
- Updates advisement communication materials
- May conduct surveys of student services to evaluate program effectiveness; compiles data to prepare activity reports as needed
- May occasionally offer general academic advisement to students in degree and certificate programs.
