Position Highlights

The University of Arizona's College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (CALES) is seeking candidates for an Academic Advisor II. The Academic Advisor II will serve as frontline contact to students in the Norton School of Human Ecology (HECL), within the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. The advisor provides proactive, student-centered advising to undergraduate students, supporting their academic, personal, and professional development. As a key point of contact, the advisor helps students navigate university policies, select courses, connect with resources, and create academic plans aligned with their goals. This role fosters student engagement, promotes retention, and contributes to a positive university experience by building supportive relationships and connecting students with campus resources. The advisor maintains current knowledge of academic programs, college and university requirements to guide students effectively. Academic advisors guide students on their academic degree paths.

There may be occasional evening and weekend work for student-related events.

The advisor will serve as primary advisor for Fashion Science and Technology (FITS) Main Campus Majors - Sophomores-Seniors (approximate caseload: 181 students); primary advisor for Main Campus FITS Minors (approximate caseload: 187 students). Provides advising support for additional students in the Norton School as needed, which can include advising for Human Development and Family Science (HDFS), Retailing and Consumer Sciences (RCSC), and Personal Family and Financial Planning (PFFP) majors or minors.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising & Retention:

  • Provide developmental academic advising to a multifaceted undergraduate student population through individual and group interactions.
  • Assist students in understanding degree requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Interpret and apply university regulations, helping students make informed decisions about academic progress.
  • Guide students through academic petitions, change of major processes, and graduation planning.
  • Utilize advising systems to maintain accurate records and track student milestones.
  • Co-facilitate or support delivery of student workshops and orientation sessions under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Support student onboarding and orientation programs.
  • Identify and refer students to appropriate campus services for academic and personal support.
  • Contribute to design and delivery of student success interventions based on advisor insights and student needs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and departmental staff to support curriculum delivery and academic planning.
  • Participate in curriculum meetings to ensure advising input on academic issues.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating advising materials and degree maps to maintain accuracy.
  • Monitor student data to support interventions and identify trends.
  • Participate in advising meetings, committees, and ongoing training.
  • Contribute to college initiatives related to advising, student support, or retention.
  • Seek professional development to enhance advising practices and policy knowledge.
  • Share best practices and support onboarding of new advisors as appropriate.
  • Support college recruitment, outreach, and engagement activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by advising leadership.

Academic Advising & Retention - Norton School Specific:

  • Lead advisor for FITS program and liaison to faculty regarding student concerns, curriculum needs, course scheduling, etc.
  • Provide advising support for additional students in the Norton School as needed, which can include advising for RCSC, PFFP, and HDFS majors or minors.
  • Coordinate Norton Student Services events.
  • Represent Norton School at various recruitment events at University of Arizona and in wider Tucson community. These events may involve occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Teach or co-teach 195 introductory courses for students new to the Norton School, and majoring in FITS, RCSC, PFFP, and HDFS.
  • Supervisor Preceptor/Undergraduate TA for 195 introductory courses.
  • Attend FITS Faculty Meetings and Undergraduate Committee meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and approaches related to academic advising, teaching, or counseling in higher education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including teaching and presentation skills.
  • Proactive, open, and responsive interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving and creative thinking skills.
  • Effective organization skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to new learn new policies, procedures, and technological systems quickly.
  • Knowledge of General Education curriculum requirements at the University of Arizona.
  • Ability to develop basic printed materials and website content to assist advising and recruitment efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field related to area of assignment.
  • Previous experience serving undergraduate students in academic advising or other student-related services at the University of Arizona or similar higher education institution.
  • Experience with University of Arizona Student Information Systems (UAccess).
  • Experience using UAccess Analytics.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with post secondary students.
