JOB SUMMARY

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Connecticut seeks candidates for a full-time Academic Advisor 2 (P4) position in the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs. Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, this position will advise pharmacy students about specific academic programs and policies of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and counsel them regarding appropriate educational and career goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Functions independently and apply broader counseling skills in helping pharmacy students plan an appropriate academic program.
  • Works closely with students, faculty, and other University offices to troubleshoot and resolve problems that interfere with the successful completion of that program.
  • Advises students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines and related matters.
  • Develop plans of academic study. Reviews student transcripts and assists in making decisions regarding transfer of major within or into the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, requests for excess credit, double major, or dual degrees.
  • Interprets academic regulations and serves as a resource for students, faculty, parents, and others with questions about programs, academic policies, scholarship/award opportunities, and other pertinent information; makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Monitors student progress and work closely with faculty and other University offices to identify and resolve problems.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations regarding warning, exclusion, suspension, or dismissal; provides additional counseling to warned students, those with academic difficulties, and students contemplating withdrawal.
  • Provides personal, career-related, and other non-academic counseling as appropriate.
  • Assists with recruitment efforts for the pharmacy program throughout the year.
  • Serves as the point person on researching and implementing new resources, programs, technology for advising programs, and training users (ex. Nexus).
  • Plans and implements academic advising programs (i.e., Orientation Programs for BS and Transfer Students) serving as a resource to families and students for information at Orientation and Open Houses
  • Compiles statistical reports and maintains appropriate files and records, which may be computerized.
  • Writes and/or edits informational and publicity materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or related field and four years of experience in counseling and advising students; OR master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field and two years of experience.
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and counseling skills.
  • Experience with and commitment to student development.
  • Experience troubleshooting problems that interfere with the student’s academic progress and work effectively to resolve them.
  • Experience working with special student populations, including transfer students, double major, dual degree, etc.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Team-oriented with demonstrated interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and experience in office software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Publisher.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of experience in counseling and advising students.
  • Experience with pharmacy and pharmaceutical science programs.
  • Experience completing tasks of high quality and integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience providing quality customer service and exercising sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Experience working independently, assessing programmatic needs, and developing creative solutions.

The selected incumbent must have the ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes.
