Job Duties:
This will be a fixed term appointment effective approximately 09/15/2025 - 06/30/2026. To learn more about this type of appointment please see the UW System Administrative Policy 1251: Appointment Terms & Designation of Positions and Chapter 10 of Wisconsin State Statute: UWS10.
The Academic Advisor works with new and undeclared students to provide holistic advising services helping students matriculate to the university, and providing support during their first year on campus resulting in retention of students. This position serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources. Advisors work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. They also serve as a liaison to specific colleges and departments to ensure accurate information is provided to both the department and students. The advisor will be asked to represent the department at university events, and to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment.
Job Responsibilities:
Academic Advising (85%):
- Assist students with program planning, general course selection, registration, and schedule review
- Engage students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources which could support their success and engagement with the campus community
- Counsel students on academic probation, receiving academic alerts, and/or are identified as being at risk to succeed
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
Department Representation (5%):
- Participate in SOAR days, Warhawk Preview/Admitted Days, and other campus events by presenting about the services available in the AAEC
- Coordinate with assigned college/departments to ensure AAEC staff are updated on curricular changes or opportunities
Miscellaneous (10%):
- Serve on department, division, or university committees
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- Proactively engages students as needed
- Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
Department: Academic Advising & Exploration Center
Compensation:
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $45,000 commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree WITH a minimum three years of professional higher education experience in a student-facing and/or student support role required OR Master's degree (or enrollment in a Master's degree program)
- Experience in teaching, training, and/or presenting to diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (or enrollment in a Master’s degree program)
- Demonstration of excellent organizational, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of PeopleSoft and EAB Navigate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
