Serves as front line contact for undergraduate and graduate students for developmental academic advising to help students create schedules, find engagement opportunities, and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Uses University systems and tools to maximize undergraduate student retention. Approves students' academic degree programs, making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Advisement:

  • Advises students and prospective students in face-to-face and zoom appointments, phone calls, and via email (or Trellis cases) by appointment or drop-in.
  • Assesses individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Substitutes transfer credit and determines whether or not degree or admission requirements have been met.
  • Assists undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options. Assists master's level students in determining courses and curricular progression.
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Counsels students on options to satisfy degree requirements. Completes degree checks.
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in completion. Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring).
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Uses University systems, maintains student files, records, and advisors notes.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students' educational options.
  • Assists with Transfer and First Year Orientation, including evaluating incoming students' credits, representing nursing majors to incoming families and students, and making referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Refers to policies and practices for guidance but determines best course of action to achieve results. Consults with advising leadership as needed.

Service to College and University:

  • Sits on department committees, learning about curriculum and student situations and issues.
  • Works with faculty members and students to interpret policies and practices.
  • Attends regular meetings to stay up-to-date on policy and processes across campus and the College (e.g. OSAA staff meetings, UPAC meetings, CON Staff Council).
  • Maintains accurate cohort onboarding and progression tracking in collaboration with Academic Advising and Admissions teams.
  • Participate in student outreach to meet college and university student success goals (e.g. outreach to students not enrolled for retention initiatives or recruitment initiatives)
  • Assists with College Ceremonies and Convocations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret learning experience needs of students.
  • Ability to use administrative systems and standardized software programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to learn new software and systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner with varied constituencies.
  • Focused attention to detail and a high standard of excellence.
  • High levels of initiative, dependability, flexibility and motivation.
  • Ability to establish, maintain and sustain positive, professional working relationships internally and cross-functionally.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, service-oriented office environment.
  • Ability to multi-task during critical time periods.
  • Ability to problem solve and navigate multiple systems to find viable solutions.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
