About the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences

The College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences (CLAS) is the largest college at the University, housing nineteen academic departments, five centers and institutes, and numerous programs focused on community service, social justice, and global discovery. Position Summary

The College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences at MSU Denver invites applications for Academic Advisors, either at the Academic Advisor I or Academic Advisor II level. We anticipate hiring several candidates from this posting.

The Academic Advisor I at MSU Denver is primarily responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing long-term degree planning.Academic advisors help students develop educational goals and define a career path, through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. Further, they monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. Academic advisors also participate in University-wide and unit-specific advising initiatives.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the Academic Advisor II at MSU Denver works with advising leadership, immediate supervisors, and faculty and/or staff where appropriate, to understand advising and retention data and student success implementation strategies. Assisting with and/or participating in recruiting events may also be required.

Responsibilities

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide Advising Services to Students
  • Conduct advising sessions with students, assist with course selection, scheduling and registration questions using advising-based technology
  • Utilize knowledge of curriculum to help students with long-term degree planning
  • Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources
  • Provide basic information related to career planning, financial literacy, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs
  • Teach students about electronic advising and registration tools and how to best utilize them for success (e.g., Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, Student Success Collaborative suite, etc.)
  • Participates in New Student Orientation sessions and Registration events.
  • Participation in recruiting events may be required
  • Monitor Progress and Retention of Assigned Students
  • Utilize advising-based systems to track and engage assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert)
  • Deliver appropriate student-centered outreach
  • Participate in retention initiatives
  • Professional Development
  • Begin or continue building knowledge of advising techniques and approaches
  • Participate in university-wide and unit specific advising professional development opportunities (e.g., Advising retreats, NACADA webinars, conferences, etc.)
  • Serve on committees, councils, taskforces, etc. where appropriate
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications

Academic Advisor I

  • Bachelors degree
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional setting helping others reach their academic, professional, and/or personal goals
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with the educational needs of a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritizing, and preparation skills

Academic Advisor II

  • Bachelors degree
  • Has consistently demonstrated a thorough understanding of and effective execution of Advisor I responsibilities, and alignment with the operational commitments of the MSU Denver advising program
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g., Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with advising techniques or approaches at an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with the educational needs of a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

Academic Advisor I

  • Masters degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g., Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable

Academic Advisor II

  • Masters degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in accessing, understanding, and/or using student data for successful outcomes
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
  • Experience assisting with developing and/or leading trainings, workshops, or presentations

Schedule Information

  • Full-time
  • Exempt
  • Days of Week: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Evenings and Weekend Work: Weekend work on rare occasion for orientations
  • Schedule: Hybrid schedule flexibility with in person work as well as some remote opportunities subject to supervisor approval and program needs.
  • Travel: For professional development opportunities only

Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The salary ranges that the University reasonably expects to pay for these positions are established at:

Academic Advisor I: $49,000 - $52,000
Academic Advisor II: $52,000 - $55,000

These positions are paid monthly and are eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
