Academic Advisor I Job Summary The LAS Student Success Hub provides a collaborative structure for advisors to support students across multiple programs, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a supportive leadership team dedicated to professional advising and student success. We are hiring Academic Advising I candidates for the following advising teams within the LAS Hub: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Human Development and Family Studies. These candidates can expect to be cross-trained in other related disciplines to facilitate students' access to high quality advising experiences while also allowing for variety and expanded opportunities for the advisor. With minimal supervision, this position uses professional advising and guidance skills to assess diverse needs of students and provide appropriate advice related to academic planning and progress leading to degree completion. Contributes to the design, implementation, and evaluation of advising programs that contribute to the academic advising mission of the academic unit. This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect and equity that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel valued and welcomed, respecting all students in their quests for individual success through degree programs, certificates, etc. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in communication, time management, and problem solving. The LAS Student Success Hub seeks and values team members who are curious, resilient, proactive, and committed to student success. Responsibilities Meets with LAS undergraduate students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, and course planning and registration.- Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, tutoring, career decisions, mental health, or other various needs.
- Actively engages in campus-based professional development communities, including but not limited to UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in academic advising.
- Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms to monitor student progress. Participates in proactive advising and intervention strategies for assigned student populations.
- Proficient in degree tracking software, record keeping systems, and advising related technologies.
- Maintains students' academic files that include a record of advising activity, referrals, exceptions made, transfer courses, etc.
- Collects and disseminate information to students, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
- Participates in the college portion of new student orientation each semester.
- Assist with data compilation, statistical reports, and correspondence, depending on the area of assignment.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and trainings related to advising.
- Can serve on university and college committees and makes recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes, and program development and published materials.
- Supports their advising team in admission outreach events and activities.
- Other advising related activities as needed and assigned.
- In addition, advisors take on additional advising-related departmental responsibilities, which include but are not limited to service on undergraduate program, scholarship, and curriculum committees.
