"Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional II)"

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) at San Diego State University is seeking a dedicated Academic Adviser to join our team. This role provides an exciting opportunity to offer equity-minded academic advising and support to a diverse population of students. As part of a dynamic team, you will help guide students through academic challenges and assist them in progressing toward degree completion.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide academic advising for an assigned caseload of students, covering major, General Education (GE), University requirements, study abroad, transfer credits, and graduation requirements.
• Support students facing academic challenges, including those on probation, disqualification, or unsatisfactory academic progress, by identifying issues and connecting them with appropriate campus resources.
• Assist students in managing academic withdrawals and create action plans to promote academic recovery and success.
• Conduct individual appointments, group advising sessions, and virtual meetings. Respond to inquiries via email, phone, and in person.
• Contribute to initiatives that facilitate student retention and academic progression.
• Help in the development and implementation of advising policies and practices within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

• Working knowledge of barriers for students from underrepresented groups.
• Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse range of students, staff, and faculty.
• Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
• Experience working with diverse student populations and effectively presenting to audiences of varying backgrounds and group sizes.
• Experience in student advising or supporting students in an academic or educational setting.
• Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies and procedures in various communication formats, including in-person, phone, video conferencing, and email.
• Familiarity with general education and graduation requirements in higher education, particularly within public university systems preferred.
• Three years of experience in student services, academic advising, admissions, registrar functions, or a related area within higher education preferred.
• Master's degree preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department's budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $5,083/month.
