Job Summary:
We are hiring two Academic Advisors in the department of Student Academic Affairs in the College of Letters & Science (L&S) at UW-Madison.
L&S Academic Advising Services (AAS) staff members assist and support undergraduate students in exploring educational goals, learning about academic requirements, navigating the university structure, gaining an understanding and appreciation of the liberal arts, and progressing in a timely fashion toward degree completion. L&S AAS provides holistic, comprehensive, and accurate academic advising that enhances students' Wisconsin Experience.
The Academic Advisors will support L&S High Impact Practice Programs as needed. For example, AAS advisors might serve as assigned advisors for students living in an L&S learning community. The advisors will also advise at AAS Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR). AAS plays an essential role coordinating the L&S SOAR program in collaboration with advisors from across the College. AAS welcomes more than 2,500 incoming students at SOAR during a large portion of the summer and a three-day period in January prior to the spring term.
This is a student facing position and most work is done onsite, however advisors can be approved for 20% remote work. Most of the work for this position occurs during normal business hours, however there are occasional events in the evenings and on Saturdays.
Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Engages with committees, project groups, and High Impact Practice Programs focused on operational, functional, or programmatic efforts both within AAS and in collaboration with campus partners
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources

The Academic Advisor positions are part of the College of Letters & Science Academic Advising Services team (L&S AAS), a unit in L&S Student Academic Affairs. L&S AAS serves as an entry point for undergraduate students in the College, which has growing academic programs and welcomes several thousand new first-year and transfer students each year. L&S AAS is a generalist advising unit that advises undeclared students across all 65+ majors in the College of Letters & Sciences and collaborates with other academic and student services units.

Compensation:
The expected salary range for this position is $50,000 up to $63,697 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay within this range will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in higher education, advising, or student services.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team to accomplish organizational goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with High Impact Practice Programs.
  • Experience fostering a welcoming environment for all.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students and knowledge of approaches to student development.
  • Ability to share complex information in a clear and organized manner in both verbal and written forms to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving skills and ability to navigate challenges constructively.
  • Excellent organizational skills as well as strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to articulate how a liberal arts education supports student learning, exploration, and long‑term success.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required
