Academic Scholar in Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Skills

The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for a full-time academic scholar in Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Skills. Depending on qualifications and career track expectations, the appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (Teaching) (with tenure).

The anticipated start date is March 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed upon date.

This successful applicant will teach in the undergraduate program with an emphasis on basic and general surgical skills with an emphasis on participating in small animal surgery.

We are looking for additional faculty to join our team for our expanded class size. Teaching will be the main focus of this position and will include didactic, clinical and professional skills laboratories, and 4th year rotation teaching in the DVM program. Clinical and teaching duties in addition to basic surgery instruction will be assigned based on needs of the program. UCVM employs a distributed veterinary teaching hospital and clinical duties, and rotation teaching will occur in partner practices and other practice settings. Service will be 10-20% of assigned duties pending rank.

Position Requirements Qualifications must include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in surgery (such as extensive continuing education, surgery internship or residency). Board certification (ACVS or ECVS in small or large animal) is considered an asset but is not a requirement. A graduate degree in clinical or educational research is considered an asset. The candidate must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta as a general practice registered veterinarian.

Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) normally requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Commitment to, or experience with, defining learning goals, supporting student learning activities and engagement, and creating assessment strategies may also be required. Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and curriculum design of the relevant discipline or field as well as engaging in other scholarly professional or creative activities that strengthens and informs the academic staff member’s knowledge base and expertise is required.

Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching), in addition to the requirements of an Assistant Professor (Teaching), requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, a demonstrated ability to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning and student engagement, to design student learning experiences and assessment strategies grounded in a clearly articulated teaching philosophy, and to engage in scholarly, professional, or creative activities. Continuous development and demonstration of a scholarly foundation for designing and implementing innovative teaching and that supports student learning, ability to create respectful and inclusive learning environments that promote student engagement, participate in learning activities, networks and communities, and engagement in reflective practice to adjust and strengthen one’s teaching, learning and assessment practices is required.
