The Academic & Success Coach – Biology for The EXCELerator at SCC provides personalized academic support, focusing on student success in a wide range of biology-related courses. This role involves coaching students on effective study techniques, time management, and goal setting, while coordinating workshops, tutoring sessions, and collaborating with faculty to enhance the student experience. SCC is particularly interested in team members with a passion for student success and the drive to ensure students are maximizing their potential at the college.
In this role, the Academic & Success Coach will provide one-on-one coaching to students, focusing on study techniques, time management, and strategies for mastering biological concepts and skills. This role will actively promote tutoring and student success coaching services on and off campus for biology, encouraging students to seek assistance and utilize the robust services The EXCELerator offers. They will support the Director in developing marketing strategies to increase participation in biology academic support services. Academic Coaches must work closely with faculty, advisors, and other campus departments regarding biology courses, ensuring students have access to resources for comprehensive academic support. The Coach must also participate in campus-wide initiatives aimed at improving student retention and success in biology.
SCC has numerous discipline-focused tutors at the institution: Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Writing. Although the foundation of the Academic & Success Coach position is the same, each discipline requires specific knowledge, experience, and criteria to be met. The Academic & Success Coach-Biology will help students apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the life sciences, lead workshops on topics such as cellular biology, anatomy & physiology, microbiology, ecology, and genetics, and provide guidance on laboratory techniques, scientific writing, and exam preparation. They must also contribute to the development and assessment of tools that measure the effectiveness of tutoring and coaching services for biology.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Proficiency in introductory through advanced undergraduate biology topics, including laboratory skills and safety procedures.
- At least 6 months of experience teaching, tutoring, or providing academic support services to students at the high school or community college level.
