The Academic Success Counselor will help promote the academic success of Stanford Law students in all cycles of their student experience, from Orientation, throughout law school, and as they prepare to enter the legal profession. Reporting to the Director of Academic Success, this position will be situated in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).
The Academic Success Counselor will help support academic and bar-related programming at Stanford Law. The Academic Success Counselor will also meet one-on-one with JD, joint degree, and advanced degree law students to provide academic and Bar Exam and Bar admission advice, to help students plan for curricular requirements for graduation, and to help students improve their issue spotting and legal writing skills.
This position presents an opportunity to work with the Director of Academic Success, OSA, the Registrar’s Office, and the Stanford Law School Faculty and Staff to build upon the early stages of our academic skills program to further support our diverse student population to ensure that all students succeed at Stanford Law.
CORE DUTIES:
- Provide one-on-one academic support and counsel to students, working with them to review their study habits and performance on exams and practice problems in order to support their growth as lawyers;
- Provide one-on-one academic advising to students as they make course selections, including Advanced Degree students who must take courses that satisfy specific bar requirements, and joint degree students who have to navigate multiple programs’ requirements;
- Support the Director of Academic Success in academic and bar-related programming at SLS, including revising presentations and support for presentations and academic / bar events;
- Administer the Academic Success Program;
- Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies and mediate complex and sensitive issues. May be tasked with evaluating and recommending program improvements;
- Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students, bar exams and bar admission concerns;
- May have to escalate issues to Director of Academic Success;
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success in creating a comprehensive, student-friendly system for communicating key bar exam and admission deadlines and guidance; analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for supportive programming;
- Develop and implement plans for student outreach efforts;
- Represent the Academic Success Program at meetings and events;
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success, OSA team, Director of Legal Research & Writing, first-year Faculty, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; and
- Serve as subject matter expert to students and other departments.
