As the Accelerator Facilities Officer, you'll play a pivotal role in managing the particle accelerator facilities housed within the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne. You'll contribute to cutting-edge research by providing technical expertise, overseeing the maintenance and development of these world-class facilities, and collaborating with academic staff, postgraduate students, and external partners. This unique opportunity will expose you to internationally significant research programs across diverse fields, including quantum science, quantum technologies, advanced materials, mining, environmental sciences, and space technologies.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Facilities Management: Provide overall management and technical support for the particle accelerator facilities, including the Pelletron (0.5 – 5.0 MeV) and the Colutron (1 – 30 keV) accelerators, and associated beamlines.
  • Team Coordination: Manage and liaise with professional staff to ensure equipment and infrastructure maintenance, laboratory safety compliance, and efficient operations.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with academic staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students, providing technical guidance and assisting in their utilization of the accelerators and developmental projects.
  • Project Leadership: Take a leading role in designing, constructing, and implementing new beamline capabilities and equipment, overseeing successful project completion.
  • Operational Support: Coordinate the timely purchase of consumables and equipment components, ensuring reliable and safe operation of the accelerators and beamlines.

You may be a great fit if you are an experienced technical professional with a passion for scientific instrumentation, possessing strong analytical and management skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

You may also possess a relevant engineering, mechanical, or electrical trade certificate or equivalent, with extensive experience in technical design, fabrication, and assembly of scientific or engineering systems, including ultra-high vacuum systems and components. Demonstrate the ability to lead developmental projects, work autonomously, and have high-level computer skills for generating reports and using online systems. Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English, organizational skills to meet deadlines, and the ability to develop research projects with limited supervision.
