Department: Student Success & Engagement

Type of Position: Full-time Faculty

Exemption Status: Exempt

Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies depending on department needs, 40 hours per week

Starting Salary Range: $68,634-$104,238 and determined based on relevant years of work experience provided on application and resume.

Position Summary: This position is responsible for providing leadership and collaboration in framing a commitment to disability access as an integral aspect of JCCC. The access Advisors consult with the JCCC Community about disability and inclusive practices and provide services, strategies, and accommodations to mitigate the barriers faced by students with disabilities. The Access Advisor, in collaboration with the Access Advising team, meets with prospective and current JCCC students to determine eligibility for Access Services. Advisors serve students individually through walk-in sessions, face to face, and virtual appointments, calls, and email communication. Advisors coordinate and/or supervise implementation of accommodations Advisors work closely with instructional faculty and provide notification and consultation regarding students' accommodation needs. Advisors are members of the collaborative college community and are active on college committees and integral members of the Student Success and Engagement Division. Access Advisors have expert knowledge of disability legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, relevant case law, and legal guidance. This position is committed to student development and universal design.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in higher education administration, rehabilitation counseling, social work, psychology, counseling, special education or related field
  • Three years of experience working directly with post-secondary students with various disabilities.
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and their application to accommodation determination
  • Familiarity with the complexities of medical documentation and its alignment with accommodation determination, including the interpretation of test results such as the WAIS, Woodcock Johnson, and other diagnostics with the DSM-V
  • Ability to problem solve, collaborate, mediate conflict, and negotiate in challenging situations
  • Highly developed facilitation skills to foster a welcoming environment for students
  • Highly developed communication skills to build and promote collaborative partnerships with faculty and administration
  • Ability to independently manage time in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement related to the impact of the disability, how it relates to classroom access, and the legal aspects involved
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to present formally and informally to faculty, staff, and student groups on the disability accommodation process, definitions, perspectives, implications, applications of professional research and federal laws as requested.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with the Accessible Information Management System
  • Five years of experience working in disability services in a post-secondary setting
  • Community college experience
  • Demonstrated experience determining clinical accommodations using programmatic technical standards.
  • Prior case management work with college students with disabilities
  • Proficiency with a range of assistive technologies and adaptive equipment and their application

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Accommodation Processes - Support accessibility solutions through course design changes and reasonable accommodations to mitigate the barriers faced by individual students with disabilities.
    • Determines student eligibility for accommodations using an ongoing interactive process which includes both critical review of relevant disability documentation and an interview to understand the student's lived experience.
    • Meets directly with students who request accommodations to understand the student's perspective and to explain processes and procedures used in requesting and utilizing accommodations including digital accessibility.
    • Determines whether requested accommodations are reasonable. Communicates accommodations approved for individual students and classes and monitors implementation and effectiveness.
    • Advises students with disabilities regarding issues and concerns related to equity, access, and accommodations.
    • Assists in implementation of accommodations.
    • Maintains accurate data using AIM/myAccess system.
  • Leadership - Provide leadership and collaboration in the institutional commitment to disability access and equity.
    • Serves as primary contact with faculty regarding students with disabilities who face barriers to access and who qualify for accommodations.
    • Coordinates/Supervises accommodation processes.
    • Proactively advocates for the mitigation of barriers to access in all campus programs, services, and activities in digital, physical, and academic experiences.
    • Collaborates with Testing Services and Career Development Center regarding equitable access to support.
    • Provides information and referrals to campus resources.
    • Participates as members of various JCCC committees.
  • Continuous Education in Disability Services Field- Enhance professional knowledge and skills.
    • Participates in professional conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay current with knowledge and application of best practices in the field.
    • Reviews professional journals, research, legal decisions, and articles to stay knowledgeable about current disability, access, and equity issues.
    • Maintains membership and involvement in professional local and national disability organizations.
  • The responsibilities described represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to do all assigned responsibilities.
