POSITION SUMMARY

The Access Services Manager at the Mark O. Hatfield Library is responsible for the daily management of circulation and related services at Willamette University's main undergraduate library. This position plays a central role in library patrons' user experience. The incumbent oversees daily operations at the circulation desk, supervises student employees, and fosters a welcoming, responsive environment for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. This role requires responsiveness in a high-demand environment and often serves as the primary-and sometimes sole-point of contact for library users, representing both the library and the University.

The position involves handling unexpected and complex situations requiring sound judgment and independent decision-making. In all areas of responsibility, the incumbent safeguards the confidentiality of departmental and administrative information, including personnel actions, performance evaluations, and records, exercising discretion in all communications.

DUTIES

Primary

  • Oversee the daily operations of circulation services, including training, mentoring, and supervision of student employees
  • Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate approximately 20 student workers
  • Monitor course reserves, stacks maintenance, and the Library of Things collection
  • Manage check-in and shelving of print periodicals
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and patron-use materials
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of library displays
  • Serve as first responder for safety and security issues; coordinate with Campus Safety and communicate concerns to staff
  • Communicate with library users regarding materials, accounts, and services
  • Maintain and update library signage and ensure accuracy of access-related information on the library website
  • Perform copy cataloging and title withdrawals in the library system (Alma)
  • Provide backup support to the Technical Services Manager for resource sharing activities
  • Assist users in locating materials and understanding library resources and services
  • Foster an inclusive student work environment that values diversity, equity, and cross-cultural engagement

Secondary

  • Participate in regular library staff meetings
  • Engage with local and regional library consortia
  • Serve on library and University committees
  • Provide building supervision as needed, including occasional evenings or weekends
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or equivalent)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work the assigned schedule (11:00 AM-7:00 PM weekdays)
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to make independent decisions
  • Proficiency with complex computer systems
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and perform shelving/stack maintenance

Preferred

  • Experience in a library and/or higher education environment
  • Experience training and supervising others
  • Understanding of and commitment to intellectual freedom

Typical Work Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm, Friday 10 am to 6 pm with occasional weekends

Physical Demands & Working Conditions: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and perform shelving/stack maintenance.

Salary: $52,000 annually
