Work Location: This position is based in Tacoma, WA. This is an on-campus role only.
Position Summary:
The Accommodation Specialist serves as an interactive member of the Office of Student Accessibility and Accommodations to review supporting documentation and request for accommodations from students for quality, continuity, consistency and accuracy to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines. As a key point of contact for students, they will work to orient, support and provide guidance about the disability accommodations process and appropriate use of approved accommodations.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular, co-curricular and housing environments to determine appropriate accommodations through the interactive process
- Independently and collaboratively determine reasonable accommodations for students in university programs in a clear, well-documented, timely and effective manner
- Maintain accurate and confidential electronic records of all student interactions, requests and accommodations
- Assist SAA Director in reviewing current university accommodation-related policies and practices
- Assist faculty and students to understand parameters of approved accommodations within the scope of each individual course and serve as a resource on best practices for supporting students
- Collaborate with campus partners such as Residence Life, Academic Advising, Center for Writing and Learning, and Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services, or serve on related university committee(s) to support students with disabilities
- Provide guidance to students with disabilities on academic policies as they navigate their academic careers toward graduation
- Manage SAA Peer Mentoring Program in collaboration with SAA Director
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position is responsible for the supervision of 1-5 student staff.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related field and experience working with individuals with disabilities
- Knowledge and understanding of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students
- Proven ability to work within a culture of confidentiality, sound judgement and ability to remain neutral
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal, verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff as well as students
- Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience working with individuals with disabilities, ideally within higher-education
- Ability to manage a complex, detailed caseload of disability-related student matters
- Ability to relate to individuals of diverse abilities and backgrounds
- Commitment to developing inclusive learning spaces, applying a knowledge of models of disability, inclusive educational design, and their application in higher education
- Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops
Compensation and Benefits:
The anticipated range for this position is $23.05 to $24.50 per hour. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

- Positions that work less than .75 FTE (1,560 hours per year) do not qualify for long-term disability or education benefits.
- Positions that work less than .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will accrue paid sick leave but are not eligible for additional benefits.
- Temporary positions that work at least .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will be eligible for benefits.
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
