Job Summary
The Accountant III prepares, reconciles, and audits budgets under minimal supervision. Prepares financial reports, invoices, schedules, and/or statements. Completes journal entries. Reviews, analyzes, and approves expenditures. Determines fund balances. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, University policies, and procedures. Provides guidance, trains, and/or may supervise entry-level accountants.
Additional Department Summary
Provides professional financial support and supervision for all fiscal operations of the department of University Recreation, the Counseling Center, Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services, Health Promotion and Wellness and the Camellia Center. Performs a variety of complex administrative and accounting duties, including budget analysis and forecasting, development of budgets, auditing, and other financial related functions to ensure fiscal integrity and policy compliance. Develops and communicates annual departmental operating budgets. Supervises the preparation and performance of detailed analysis of the monthly budgets, operating statements, and account reconciliations. Supervises day-to-day operations of the University Recreation, Business Operations staff. Collaborates with department directors and campus partners to ensure effective and efficient processes within University Recreation. Develops policies to enhance financial controls and procedures for the department. Oversees University Recreation point of sale procedures and recons of credit card transactions, cash, and deposits. Oversees revenue processes of liaison departments previously listed and ensures PCI Compliance within these departments. Creates business forecasting models such as life cycle costing for capital equipment needs, cost/benefit analysis for purchase decisions, etc. for long range planning. Completes required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Holds staff accountable for completion of required training. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related financial field and five (5) years of accounting experience; OR Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and three (3) years of accounting experience.
Skills and Knowledge
Knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial accounting and analysis, cash flow analysis, performance reporting, report and opinion writing, audit preparation and management, business forecasting and modeling. Demonstrates ability and professional judgment in independent decision making, policy interpretation, and problem-solving. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to represent the University to both internal and external constituents in a professional manner. Knowledge and appreciation of student development theory. Ability to engage students in effective learning and development opportunities. Demonstrated competency in advanced spreadsheet and database operations and an ability to interact successfully with complex administrative management and financial on-line systems. Demonstrated commitment supporting all students.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the operational and fiscal management of a business office in a college or university setting.
