Qualifications: Organic Chemistry I Laboratory, as the first course of a two-semester sequence, introduces organic structure and bonding; structure and reactivity of alkyl halides, alkenes, and alkynes; reaction mechanisms; and structure determination by IR and other methods. The lab emphasizes the basic experimental methods for reacting, isolating, purifying, and identifying organic compounds. Students focus on careful experimentation, hands-on skills, detailed record-keeping, and thorough analysis of results.

There are 3 available sections of this laboratory; each section will be taught in person on the Moraga campus during the 2026 Spring term. Section 02: Tuesday, 8:30 - 11:30 am. Section 05: Thursday, 8:30 - 11:30 am. Section 06: Thursday, 1:30 - 4:30 pm.

In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week per lab) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.

To ensure consistency between sections of this multi-section course, instructors will faithfully implement the syllabus, experiments, laboratory activities, assessments, and/or grading standards provided by the Lab Coordinator or Department Chair.

The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field; and undergraduate teaching experience in organic chemistry lecture or lab, OR teaching experience in any subfield of chemistry and research experience in organic chemistry. Preference will be given to those who have previously taught the course or CHEM 104L. Candidates must reside in California.

The salary range for this position is $6,208 - $8,590 (2.5 units) and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
