Position Description
The Master's in Cultural Heritage Management program seeks an adjunct instructor to teach Reading the Landscape, a course examining cultural landscapes as dynamic places shaped by people, ecology, memory, labor, and aesthetics. The course traces the historical development of cultural landscape theory; analyzes policy, legal, and advocacy frameworks for designation and conservation; and builds transferable skills in archival research, field documentation, and geospatial technologies. Students apply these methods to develop evidence-based evaluations of landscape significance and integrity and feasible management recommendations. The instructor will deliver an existing curriculum while contributing professional expertise, examples, and perspective to enrich the student learning experience.
We seek candidates with strong theoretical grounding in cultural landscape concepts and substantial practical experience in landscape documentation, evaluation, or management. Relevant backgrounds may include cultural heritage management, historic preservation, landscape architecture, geography, planning, or related fields.
The selected instructor will initially co-teach with full-time faculty to familiarize them with the program, students, and broader curriculum. Strong communication skills and a commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment are essential.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- An advanced degree in cultural heritage management, historic preservation, landscape architecture, geography, planning, or a relevant field, with a master's degree at minimum.
- At least three years of professional work experience working with heritage landscapes.
Preferred Qualifications
- A terminal degree in cultural heritage management, historic preservation, landscape architecture, geography, planning, or a relevant field.
- 1-3 years of graduate-level teaching experience
- Five years of professional experience working with heritage landscapes.
- Strong interest in advising graduate students interested in a career in the heritage sector.

Salary Range
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
