Departmental Information
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University is composed of a team of 17 scholar-teachers who are committed to undergraduate education and to professional growth. The Department offers instruction in ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish as well as courses in English on the ancient (and modern) worlds. Our programs include five majors, four interdisciplinary minors, and MAT degrees in Spanish and ESL. We are also strong supporters of study abroad: MCLL has sponsored numerous short-term study trips and, in conjunction with the Office of Study Abroad, advises students on longer-term cultural immersion opportunities. In addition to serving our majors and minors, MCLL has the privilege of working with a significant portion of the study body through the second language literacy requirement in the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum. Faculty members publish on a diverse range of subjects and welcome the opportunity to mentor students on independent research projects.
