Walla Walla Community College is accepting applications to fill the part-time role of Adult Basic Ed/GED/ High School +/ English Language Acquisition Adjunct Faculty in the Corrections Education program located at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington.
General Responsibilities
Faculty members are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing a quality education for all WWCC students. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of teacher, mentor, and facilitator of learning. This position reports to the Director of Adult Basic Education at the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) and will be responsible for teaching classes to offenders housed at WSP in Walla Walla, WA. Successful candidates will teach assigned classes, prepare teaching materials, assign grades, maintain records, and consult with students as required by the instructional division.
This position is filled to fulfill a contract awarded to Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) to operate a correctional education program at the Washington State Penitentiary in accordance with an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections. Walla Walla Community College and its employees working in a correctional education program are expected to follow all Department of Corrections (DOC) Policies, IT and other Security requirements, follow DOC Operational Memorandums, and comply with the Superintendent's directions.
Essential Responsibilities
- Teach ABE, GED, ELA (English Language Acquisition) and/or HS+ classes utilizing both lecture and laboratory modes of instruction.
- Participate in curriculum revision, program management, and research related activities.
- Interview and place prospective students into the program.
- Maintain assessment records and student progress accountability measures on all students enrolled in the assigned course sections.
- Track, maintain, and assign grades.
- Ensure that classroom/lab and equipment are in excellent condition and maintained.
- Participate in meetings and training as required by WWCC and DOC.

- Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect.
- Ability to develop accurate standards to measure learning or administer testing or other evaluations to determine effectiveness and ensure a high level of comprehension has been achieved.
Required Qualifications
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college. For remote work, applicants must reside in either WA, OR, ID, CA, IL, PA, or TX.
- Bachelor's degree in an academic subject area required; master's degree desired.
- Experience teaching in a correctional facility desired.
- Experience as an instructional trainer/teacher at the secondary or post-secondary level, correctional, industrial, corporate, and/or workplace setting desired.
- Curriculum development and evaluation, student advising and student recruitment experience desired.

Conditions/Terms of Employment
This is a part-time instruction assignment contingent on enrollment and located inside the Washington State Penitentiary, an adult male prison. This position interacts daily with students (incarcerated individuals), instructors, counselors, DOC, and WWCC staff. Successful candidate must have the ability to travel between buildings with or without accommodations. Washington State Penitentiary is fully ADA compliant. The campus is tobacco free institution.
Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful employment to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and provide transcripts. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Candidate may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition for consideration of employment. The college is a tobacco free institution. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
Department of Correction positions are grant funded and funding is not guaranteed. Upon loss of grant funding, the position will end. WWCC does not absorb the cost to fund DOC grant positions.
Compensation
Compensation for an adjunct assistant professor is contingent on enrollment and paid in accordance with the contract between the WWCC Board of Trustees and the WWCC Association for Higher Education. found on the WWCC Human Resources Page. Refer to Appendix C for the adjunct salary schedule.
