Position Summary
Adjunct Faculty provides instruction and support to students preparing to work in the field of Early Childhood Education Program (birth through age 8) and families. Required duties include teaching assigned courses in evening, online, or hybrid formats, maintaining regular accessibility to students, connecting course content to early childhood settings, and conducting required practicum observations at approved early learning sites where applicable. curriculum planning, child guidance, administration of childcare programs, health and safety, family and community partnerships, observation and assessment, foundational reading and language development, the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development (NCFELD), and practicum courses. Adjunct Faculty may also be responsible for designing, developing, and revising courses to meet program requirements, curriculum standards, and current early childhood education practices. Additional duties may include collaborating with faculty and staff, supporting student recruitment and retention, participating in program and College activities, and completing other program-related responsibilities as assigned by the Program Chair.
A part-time faculty member teaches students and facilitates learning in an assigned academic discipline. Part-time faculty are expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and high academic standards. Their primary focus is direct student teaching, preparation and assessment of instruction, and appropriate support of learners. All academic professionals are expected to know and follow College policies and to respect the academy. Faculty may be assigned a teaching schedule that includes any college location and, at times, meets student, program, and college needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Successfully prepare, manage, and deliver course content in order to achieve course objectives, accommodate diverse learning styles, and meet student learning outcomes.
- Actively engage students and provide prompt, objective, respectful, and effective feedback.
- Communicate and follow the course syllabus content in accordance with directions provided and administrative guidance.
- Work collaboratively with the College's support services to identify and address the students' academic support needs.
- Utilize College technology for the delivery of instruction and completion of operational processes; this includes but is not limited to the College's learning management system, email and calendaring solution, document management system(s), student information system, and employee portals.
- Meet deadlines, including maintaining and submitting accurate class records, employee records/requests, and other assigned tasks.
- When applicable, ensure laboratories are appropriately stocked with required supplies and that equipment is in safe operating order.
- Facilitate a positive, student-centered, and professional environment among students, faculty, and staff.
Required Education/Experience
- Masters degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Birth–Kindergarten Education, or a related field; or a masters degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a closely related content area.
- At least five years of professional experience working in early childhood education, including experience with children from birth through age eight.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, child development, and early childhood curriculum and assessment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Online teaching experience, preferably using Canvas.
- Availability to teach in the evening, this is an evening program
- At least two years of higher education teaching experience beyond the graduate assistant level.
- Experience designing, developing, and revising college-level courses.
- Experience administering or supervising a childcare or early learning program.
- Experience supervising early childhood practicum students or mentoring early childhood educators.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development (NCFELD).
- Knowledge of North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education requirements and early childhood program standards.
