Position Summary
MPH residential alumni practicum advisors provide concentration-specific practicum support throughout the practicum search, selection, planning, implementation, and evaluation process. Their responsibilities include:
- Reviewing SPHG 703 pre-course survey data to understand students’ practicum interests, needs, and questions.
- Conducting at least one ~30-minute meeting with each student to review their practicum planning document and direct them to resources, opportunities, and connections as appropriate.
- Attending SPHG 703 class sessions (select Fridays from 1:25-2:25 p.m.) during the spring term via Zoom.
- Responding to student and teaching team emails within 2 business days, excluding holidays and out of office dates.
- Hosting office hours to support students as they apply for, interview for, and select practicum opportunities.
- Reviewing and providing feedback on the appropriateness and feasibility of learning agreements.
- Assisting with practicum tracking and documentation for students in their section.
- Reviewing and responding to students’ mid-practicum surveys.
- Troubleshooting and providing technical assistance during practicum as needed.
- Assessing students’ practicum products for competency demonstration.
- Participating in teaching team meetings.
- Participating in practicum quality improvement processes.
- In the event a student requests an Incomplete grade in a practicum course, the practicum advisor is responsible for resolving the Incomplete with the student in consultation with the MPH Practicum Director.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- A masters in public health is required.
- Must have experience completing a Gillings MPH practicum.
- Must have significant interest and experience in career mentoring.
