Position Title: Adjunct Sociology Instructor

Pay Grade Level: F-PT

FLSA: Exempt

Job Summary/Basic Function

Bay de Noc Community College is seeking qualified applicants to teach in-person Introduction to Sociology courses at the Iron Mountain, MI campus. Instructors are responsible for establishing and promoting an effective learning environment to maximize student learning. Instructors may be assigned to teach introductory and general courses in traditional classroom/labs, hybrid, or online settings as needed. We may also have options to teach the Bay College Introduction to Sociology courses at local high schools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher (or 18 graduate level credits) in sociology OR Master’s degree in a sociology-related field (social work, counseling, etc.) with a minimum of 2 years in a relevant clinical field.
  • Experience teaching sociology courses at the college level
  • Commitment to quality instruction in a learner-centered environment with the goal of consistently improving student success
  • Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy
  • Ability to provide diverse teaching and learning approaches to diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated skill in effective written and oral communications
  • Demonstrated literacy in information technology and computer use
  • Commit to value, respect, and provide an equitable learning experience in an inclusive, welcoming environment; standing against discrimination or harassment to educate all students regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran or military status, or other protected status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in teaching courses at the post-secondary level, preferably in a community college setting
  • Experience with active and collaborative learning strategies
  • Online teaching certification

Job Duties

  • Instruct Introduction to Sociology courses offered at Bay College Iron Mountain Campus.
  • Facilitate student learning through the following activities: Developing/revising course syllabi that share with students the expectations, standards, policies, and learning objectives of the course. Contributing to the development and delivery of assessments of course and program learning outcomes. Recognizing and responding to different student learning styles and needs. Developing and using learning materials, resources, and technology. Maintaining student attendance records, grades, and other required records. Adhering to the ethical standards of the field of sociology, Bay College the State of Michigan, the Higher Learning Commission, FERPA and other educational regulations. Providing an orderly and safe learning environment.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of sociology and teaching by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Communicate with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a professional manner through the use of telephone, email, Zoom, mail, and/or face-to-face communication.
  • Work with lab assistants, learning assistants, or student workers as needed.
  • Participate in professional activities such as, but not limited to, curriculum planning, syllabus writing, examination development, textbook selection, program revision, online teaching certification, and outcome assessment.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
