Advanced synthesis and spectroscopy of lanthanide-doped nanoparticles

Lanthanide ion (Ln3+) doped upconverting nanoparticles can convert low-energy photons into higher-energy photons. This upconversion fluorescence has tremendous importance for a broad spectrum of applications in upconversion thermometry, bio-imaging, drug delivery, theranostics, photovoltaics, banknote etc. security and other applications. Yet, many fundamentals of controlled synthesis and structure-property/spectroscopy relationships remain undiscovered, leaving prospective PhD candidates a chance to make a significant contribution to this hot field of science.

We welcome expressions of interest from academically strong candidates (GPA of 8+ out of 9 using New Zealand scale or equivalent), with relevant practical skills in synthesis of nanomaterials (we are interested in exploring novel materials, such as MOFs etc., as hosts for Ln-ion clusters).

Prior experience with spectroscopic studies would be a bonus, yet, quick learners will be provided with ample opportunities to master advanced spectroscopic techniques available to our team at University of Canterbury and wider within Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies.

Prior track record in research as demonstrated by relevant publications in reputable journals as well as a degree from an internationally recognised University would be another major bonus for applicants.

The successful applicant will acquire a range of skills in the novel area of Ln-doped upconverting nanoparticles, including in synthesis, characterisation and advanced spectroscopy, all of which could be also applied to other areas of nanotechnology in the future career direction of successful candidate.

Last, but not least, Christchurch is arguably one of the most beautiful and safest places to study and live in New Zealand (ranked in the top 100 QS Best Student Cities 2025) with numerous natural beauty places right at our doorstep or short trip away.

To apply, e-mail your cover/motivation letter, CV tailored to this opportunity, transcripts (in English) and proof of meeting English language requirements to A/Prof. Vladimir Golovko vladimir.golovko@canterbury.ac.nz. Please, make sure to include details of two referees who know you well and are willing to provide a reference letter on request.
