Position Summary

As an integral member of the Student Support Services staff, the TRIO Scholar Advisor position utilizes comprehensive advising and career planning strategies to support students from the start of their academic journey through to graduation. This position is knowledgeable about campus and community resources, student database tracking, money management skills, career and graduate school planning, implementing program assessment, and student retention strategies. TRIO Scholar Advisors are adept at providing training and performance management, as they supervise the student peer mentor/tutor (PMT) and Program Coordinator staff. This position is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is contingent upon the approval and continued receipt of sufficient funds.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • 55% - Manage a caseload of students
    • Support students from entry into the institution through to graduation by offering comprehensive advising and career planning services
    • Assist with course selection, scheduling, and registration
    • Help student with long-term degree planning
    • Refer student to appropriate University resources
    • Implement outreach efforts to encourage student retention and persistence
    • Assist with intake, assessment, and orientation of new program participants
    • Interview potential participants, determine student's program eligibility using Banner Student Information System, Degree Progress Report, and Student Success
    • Navigate to make recommendations on students' acceptance to the program
    • Provide tutoring for participants, particularly those who score low on the Universities writing and reading and/or math assessment test(s)
    • Develop instructional materials appropriate for tutorial process
    • Utilize Banner Student Information System, Degree Progress Report, and Student Success Navigate to assess student records at key points throughout fall and spring semester
  • 15% - Supervision of Student Staff
    • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising student Peer Mentor Tutors
    • Assign each student a caseload and conduct caseload review meetings
    • Arrange leadership and training opportunities for Peer Mentor Tutors
    • Review and approve documentation of services submitted by staff
    • Train student staff on social justice and equity issues
    • Supervise peer mentor tutor workshop development
  • 15% - Workshop Development and Presentation, and Other Student Activities
    • Plan and facilitate enrichment activities and workshops designed to increase student persistence and success (e.g. study skills, listening skills, reading skills, note-taking techniques, stress management, financial literacy and life skills)
    • Coordinate graduate school visits for program participants
    • Facilitate New Student Orientation each fall and spring semester
    • Track student program participation and scholarship list each fall and spring semester
    • Oversee monthly events calendar for student program participation
    • Maintain online workshop platform for student participation
  • 10% - Professional Development
    • Remain up to date on advising systems and trends in developmental advising
    • Become/remain knowledgeable about the curriculum over time
    • Make appropriate use of technology as it changes
  • 5% - Additional duties
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of overall program goals and priorities
    • Assist with the overall evaluation of program effectiveness and assist with performance reports requested by the project director
    • Use effective communication skills and represent SSS at campus-wide meetings and events as requested by the project director
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the project director

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of experience providing support and/or services to first-generation and/or undeserved student populations in the areas of teaching, academic advising, career exploration, goal setting, graduate school planning and financial aid
  • Experience using computer-based student information system (like Banner Student Information Systems, SSC)
  • A commitment to expanding knowledge relating to equity and social justice
  • Experience with program implementation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or related field
  • Experience with undergraduate programs, policies and campus resources
  • Experience supervising student staff
  • Experience overcoming academic barriers as a low-income, first-generation, and/or student with a disability and prior experience with individuals overcoming socioeconomic barriers to success
  • Experience following state and federal regulations of TRIO grant in student programming
  • Ability to prioritize, juggle, and execute multiple tasks
  • Knowledge of student development theories and best practices for underrepresented students
  • Have a strong understanding of one's own privilege and how that plays a role in all aspects of the position

Work Hours

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week, Non-Exempt
  • Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm with some evening and weekend work
  • Schedule: This is an in-person position with the flexibility to have some remote work
  • Travel: N/A

Salary for Announcement

We anticipate the qualified candidate to be placed between $47,300 - $78,722. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. Additionally, Student Affairs has committed to tying our salaries to an understanding of a living wage. To that end, we will not pay less than $47,300.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
