Advisor, Youth & Adult Literacy Program
Description
The Advisor, Youth & Adult Literacy Program is responsible for advising new and continuing students within the Youth & Adult Literacy Programs at Rowan College of South Jersey by providing academic planning and career exploration opportunities. The Advisor’s assignment may include specific academic cohorts of students, and the responsibility of apprising students of college policies and procedures. The Advisor, working within the team, is expected to assist with implementing and conducting advisement and retention programs based on student needs.
This is a full-time, grant-funded position, ending June 30, 2026.
Examples of Duties
- Provides orientation and advisement for student cohorts and communicates with other program staff.
- Advises new, continuing, and returning students concerning appropriate course selection and academic planning for the Youth & Adult Education Programs.
- Appropriately utilizes data system to assist students with registration.
- Reaches out to and meets with at-risk student populations to mitigate barriers that prevent them from progressing toward program completion.
- Creates and presents reports to Youth & Adult Literacy staff regarding outcomes and student retention initiatives.
- Manages appointments and workshop data to compile substantive assessment and outcomes reports.
- Advises new and returning students on policies and procedures that impact their enrollment status and educational objectives. (i.e., graduation, training program transition, etc.).
- Interprets, analyzes, and instructs students on program test results.
- Advises students on careers and transfer opportunities related to major of study.
- Refers students for transfer related advisement for Rowan College of South Jersey enrollment.
- Assists students with signing up for testing and training programs.
- Ensures the integrity and confidentiality of academic records, maintaining compliance with FERPA, and other college policies, state, and federal regulations.
- Completes required paperwork and assigned tasks in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Maintains communications with students, supervisor(s), support staff, faculty, and departments in the College.
- Assists with planning, implementing, and conducting skills-development workshops deemed necessary for total student enrichment, based on students’ needs.
- Assists with college activities related to student success, retention, and transfer.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel services, student development, or a related area required.
- Applicable experience advising students in a community college or similar environment.
- Ability to use current applicable hardware and software, including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point.
- Applicable experience with higher education system administration software.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule with variable hours, includes evenings.
- Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners.
